Moms: Get in the Picture - Under the Monkey Bars blog

Moms need to be photographed more often with our kids. Don’t you think? I’m always the one taking the pictures. We have very few of me having fun with my monkeys — like these amazing shots from our recent fashion shoot. It’s so important to not only take pictures, but also be in them as well.

It doesn’t matter if you look tired or if you have spit up on your shirt. Nor does it matter if you haven’t showered or if you have roots. In the wise words of Elsa, let it go. We’ve all learned too often that life is short.

My monkeys love taking selfies with me. I always end up looking at the wrong place so my eyes look weird. I rarely like the shots we take, but it’s not about me. It’s about being part of the fun and having those memories for the kids to look back at and see that you were there. You’re always there whether or not you’re in the picture. So why not make the effort to join them more often?

Hand your camera or phone to a friend or set aside some extra cash and hire a photographer. Candid shots of the every day moments are my absolute favorites. I love seeing the joy and love of family life come through a single frame. It’s real and it’s life.

Record memories with your monkeys. Life is too short to be on the other side of the lens.

Mother's Day Fashion Shoot - Under the Monkey Bars blog

Our Mother Daughter fashion photo shoot was an absolute blast! It was lovely to spend the day bonding with my monkeys doing things we love together.

We spent Sunday morning at our favorite salon. It’s the first time ever that we all had matching nails. My stylist curled our hair for a more finished look. I haven’t had my makeup done in years and was thrilled at how natural it came out. They monkeys even wore some lip gloss and blush! It was so fun to be pampered. We truly felt like princesses.

I love that our outfits coordinate but aren’t matchy matchy. When you’re a tween, you don’t want to match your sister let alone your Mom. So uncool.

The monkeys naturally express themselves through fashion. It’s so important to feel confident and comfortable in your own skin — especially as kids get closer to middle school. We experiment and play with different looks and styles together. I know I’ll always have that special bond with them when it comes to fashion through the teenage years and beyond.

It doesn’t get more classic than blue and white for summer style. I’ve always loved the nautical look with a twist. Wear boots with dresses during this chilly New England spring, then transition to summer with sandals or flip flops.

My dress and necklace are from Pretty Little Things, the new boutique here in Newburyport. If you’re in the area, definitely check it out! It’s the perfect little shop to pick up a few on-trend pieces each season.

At first glance, I bet some Moms will think the clothes in the shop aren’t for them. Don’t make that mistake! Stop in and ask for help from the owner Michelle. I promise you won’t be disappointed. She truly has an eye for fashion and will make you look and feel fabulous!

This plaid jacket was a total score for $20! Plaid plus fur? Yes, please! What Fall threads are your favorites?

Best. Sandals. Ever.

Red Yokono Wedge - Under the Monkey Bars

Cadiz Red Wedge Sandal :: Yokono

Brown Yokono Wedge - Under the Monkey Bars

Cadiz Brown Wedge Sandal :: Yokono

You know when I find good things, I share. I’m obsessed with these sandals!!

I made room in my suitcase for my first pair of Yokono wedge sandals a few years ago on a trip to Madrid. I’ve worn them so much that I had to get some new colors and styles this summer. I searched high and low, finally finding an online store in London that ships to the States! The new sandals are just as comfortable as my original pair…and now I have 3 🙂

Why are these sandals the best sandals ever? I knew you’d ask!

Yokono shoes are handmade in Spain. There’s no break-in time because the leather is super soft like butter. My original pair looks almost new. These wedges are just the right height for every day wear and light as a feather. I can walk in them for miles with no blisters (which is huge for me because of my foot issues). They don’t have that “I’m wearing sensible shoes” look either – you know the ones. Yokono shoes run true to size; I wear a 36 or 6 1/2. And there’s a ladybug on the bottom. How fun is that?

It would be amazing if a store like Nordstrom would offer Yokono shoes in the States. Hey Nordstrom: This brand is IT! Can’t wait to see the boots in Yokono’s Fall line up.

What’s your favorite summer sandal? Share in the comments!

thredUP Finds

If you missed my Shopping to Save post from last week, head over for my top 10 tips for shopping thredUP, an online consignment store with a twist. And now, for some of my thredUP finds. Full disclosure: I’m 5’3” and never dreamed of being a model so this is completely out of my comfort zone! It’s all in the name of fashion, people. So here goes…

Silk blouse :: Odille $10

Summer tops that cover my shoulders have been on my shopping list since last summer. I realized I have mostly tanks and worry about getting too much sun on my shoulders when I’m walking around Newburyport. This classic navy silk blouse fits the bill with a flutter cap sleeve. I love the print detail too. If you haven’t heard of Odille, it’s an Anthropologie brand. thredUP is one of my favorite places to shop Anthropologie, of course besides Anthropologie itself!

 HingeTankStriped tank :: Hinge $7
Relaxed jeans :: Citizens of Humanity $20

Navy and white stripes scream summer here in Newburyport. The best part about this tank is that the straps cover bra straps perfectly (one of my things…I can’t have straps hanging out!). Hinge is a Nordstrom brand that I love so I knew it would be good quality. These jeans are vintage Citizens based on the label, and they are now one of my favorite casual pairs. The jeans came hemmed to the perfect length for flip flops: score!

FPblazerSeersucker blazer :: Free People $10

I pulled a few things from my closet and created a fresh look for ten bucks — seriously! This seersucker blazer is perfect for spring with a pair of white jeans (purchased at a consignment shop last summer), a green beaded necklace I picked up in Burlington, Vermont a few years ago, and my most favorite wedge sandals from Spain. Brunch anyone?

BostonProperTLace ruffle tee :: Boston Proper $13
Straight leg jeans :: Citizens of Humanity $20

I have been living in these jeans since they arrived on my doorstep this winter. Soft, dark wash with some nice fading and great detail on the pockets. I haven’t worn the tee yet (since it’s been freezing until a few days ago). It’s a great neutral that can be dressy or casual for spring and summer. Add a pair of gold flats and some jewelry, and it’s a new outfit for $33!

RobinTopWhite sleeveless top :: Robin $6

More stripes! More ruffles! I took a chance with this silver and black striped top because it was marked final sale, and it paid off big time. It’s a little dressier and perfect for any season if you add a cropped leather jacket or a blazer. I paired this top with black Paige pants from my closet and some Nine West flats. I picked up the earrings the other day at Beautique in Newburyport when I got my hair blown out (obviously hadn’t washed it yet when we took these pictures, but fear not…I’m clean now). When’s date night? I’ve got my outfit picked out already.

 JeansDenim from left to right…
Paige Premium Denim capris :: $12
Citizens of Humanity relaxed every day jeans :: $20
Citizens of Humanity boot cut, new with tags :: $35

I always keep my eye out for jeans when I’m ordering on thredUP. Had to show you the pockets because I’m definitely not ready to model my back side! I can’t link to the items online as each item is unique, but use this link to receive $10 off your first purchase on thredUP!  Happy shopping friends, and thanks for monkeying around today.
